About Us
BIOFarm
– an urban legend, is in a mere driving distance of 10 mins from
Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Previously she was called OStore.
Started in the year 2004, BIOFarm never wavered in her belief to
improve soil through organic methods, combating all kinds of challenges
of nature, growing non GM vegetables out of an uncontaminated land
without using any chemical pesticides / fertilizers or growth hormones.
After years of hard working, a wasteland once covered with rubbles and
boulders and high in soil salinity has been turned into a fertile field
with more than a hundred varieties of output each year. Although
BIOFarm is no more than 100 acres in space, she is professionally
supplying organic lettuces, organic sprouts, organic micro-vegetables,
organic edible flowers, organic herbs and other special items
long-termly to various star-rated hotel restaurants. In 2010, BIOFarm
has even become an appointed supplier for Shanghai World Expo.
BIOFarm
actively promotes “grow local”, “buy local”. Under the research
cooperation with The Organic Agriculture and Organic Food Institute of
Nanjing Agricultural University, BIOFarm has been challenging
local climates, soil and water, to grow non-local new types and
varieties. Seeds were kept by farm to establish the first organic
seedbank in China, and nearly 20 types that are fit for local
sustainable growing have been collected and the genetic diversity of
vegetables that are native to China has been well preserved. At present,
farm-kept organic seeds are only provided for schools to support
On-Campus Organic Garden activities. BIOFarm has especially
allocated a piece of land as exclusively non-profit seedling supply base
for UN’s sustainable treeplanting activity “Stand Up & Take Action”, to
help with environmental protection.
Through holding organic farming training courses and bio-education
promotions, BIOFarm has trained her core teams. Besides
exchanging in practice with The Organic Institute of Nanjing
Agricultural University and The Organic Food Academy of Shanxi Yuncheng
Professional Technology College, volunteers of international Jane
Goodall Institute – “Roots and Shoots” Shanghai whom BIOFarm has
trained annually, have also set up organic gardens in their schools.
BIOFarm also invites people from all over the world who care for
supporting organic farming to learn and exchange. In the meantime, under
the concept of CSA, BIOFarm supports “Organic Farmers’ Market” in
communities, making sure that consumers will have direct access to the
freshest, tastiest and safest organic produces. Our local small farmers
will gain their fair share of benefits, and agricultural sustainability
is thus ensured.
BIOFarm
is extraordinary in showing human and nature can coexist in harmony. In
here, not only will visitors relax their body and mind but also they can
enjoy and touch the nature, pick their own seasonal vegetables and
fruits. Experts and bio-tour guides at the farm will explain to you the
growth of all kinds of vegetables. Through learning and observing the
biodiversity on farm, we come to understand and care about our daily
food on the table, and to cherish our living environment. BIOFarm
has been the most favourite choice in Shanghai for school tours,
parent-child tours, and company socializing. BIOFarm is also a
model farm for eco-tourism recommended by Pudong New District Tourism
Administration.
